Abstract/Summary

The Buildings At Risk (BAR) survey is a rapid external condition assessment of all listed structures within Exmoor National Park. All 744* listed buildings, plus numerous other curtilage listed structures, were surveyed over 2018 and 2019 using the Historic England methodology and ‘risk scale’. The aim of this survey is to provide Exmoor National Park Authority with a general overview of the condition of listed buildings across the National Park, identify trends in condition, and to identify what structures are at risk or require attention so action can be taken to ensure their survival for the benefit of future generations. The majority of listed structures have been found to be in a good condition with 594 (79.9%) deemed to be at low risk. There are 103 (13.8%) structures that are deemed to be vulnerable and 47 (6.3%) shown to be at risk. There is however a noticeable decline in condition when compared against the results of the last survey of 2012/13 and the number of at risk structures has doubled since 2003.
