Full Description

[SS 925 336] Exton. Part of the shaft and the socket in all about 4 feet high, of an old cross remain in the churchyard. [1] This cross, at SS 9258 3369, has been restored. The original features comprise a simple square step, a square socket with broached corners, and the lower portion of the shaft. The rest of the shaft and the head are modern. Surveyed at 1/2500. [2,3] Churchyard Cross. Head and greater part of shaft restored, original lower third of shaft is in square socket. (Listed with St Peter's Church (MSO7155) which is grade B). [4] SS93SW EXTON CP EXTON VILLAGE 19/24 Churchyard cross about 3m south of porch, Church of St Peter GV II A churchyard cross made from Ham stone and local stone. The cross is medieval in date but was partly renewed in the late 19th Century. The cross has a square socket and broached corners. There is a 19th Century octagonal shaft surmounted by the cross with cresting. Not mentioned in Pooley, Old Crosses of Somerset, 1877. [5] SS 9258 3369. Medieval cross in the churchyard of St. Peter's Church. The cross, which is thought to be of 14th century date, comprises a square step, a socket stone with broached corners and the lower portion of the shaft. The upper part was restored in 1875 and topped with an ornate cross head. Scheduled on 12 November 2003. [6] The Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment of 2009 gave the site a survival score of 0. [7] The building was visited in June 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 5A. [8] The site was surveyed in May 2015 as part of the 2015 Exmoor Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment. It was given a survival score of 6. [9] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project.
