MDE20974 - The Bridge Inn, Lynbridge (Building)

Summary

An early 19th Century inn, modified and added to in the 20th Century. The back was extensively damaged in the 1952 flood and now includes a steel structure. The basement includes a ship's mast used as a spine beam.

Full Description

Ye Olde Cottage Inne, Lynbridge. Early to mid 19th Century, 2- and 3-storey, irregularly shaped house with front partly below road level. Main part of front is 2 storey 3 windows, although added windows have been inserted. All windows are casements with diagonal glazing bars, 4-centred heads and hood moulds.2 gabled dormers. Central gable has ornamental barge boards and attic window. Moulded string, returned round quoin pilasters and under eaves to form bed-mould. Wide 4-centred arched doorway.2 doors, each with 4-centred fanlight, with diagonal glazing bars. On left is wing with thick stone walls. This may be earlier although with similar detail dating from about 1840. River front has metal casements and is entirely modern. [1] The building was visited in April 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 6. [2]
