Full Description

A quarry or prospecting trench of probable post-medieval date on Wellshead Allotments, Exford parish, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs centred on circa SS 8401 4147. The pit, circa 25 metres long and 5 metres wide, is annotated as an Old Quarry on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, indicating that it had probably passed out of use by the second half of the 19th Century. Two substantial spoil heaps and an entrance track, all on the south side of the pit, are also visible on the aerial photographs. Five similar quarries are visible within a one kilometre radius.
