MMO2438 - Post-medieval quarry pit south of Wellshead Allotment (Monument)

A quarry of probable post-medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs to the south of Wellshead Allotment, Exford parish, centred on circa SS 8384 4137. The pit is irregular in shape but approximately 25 metres in diameter at its widest point. A spoil heap and possible entrance can be seen on the eastern side. It is annotated as Old Quarry on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889 and therefore had probably passed out of use by the end of the 19th Century. Four similar pits can be seen to the east.
