Full Description

The remains of a military structure lie above Henners Combe at SS 9155 4880. The site was surveyed using differential GPS as part of the RCHME Exmoor project. The remains comprise a platform terraced into the steep hillside; some concrete rubble lies on the east side. The site is overgrown with dense gorse, making further observation difficult. It may be an observation post or gun position. The site is associated with the World War Two tank training ranges on Bossington Hill, Selworthy Beacon and North Hill. [1] The possible observation post referred to above [1] is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. The post is defined by platform centred at SS 9155 4880. There appears to be a hollowed area to the west which probably housed the observation post. The post was part of the Second World War tank training activities recorded as MMO627. [2-4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
