MSO7483 - Post-medieval fishponds south of Chargot House (Monument)

Summary

At least seven ponds are shown on the Tithe Map and 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps. The site is named "Fishponds" on the 6" map of 1962. The ponds are likely to be associated with Chargot House.

Full Description

"Fishponds" are printed on the 6 inch 1962 map and at least seven ponds were shown on the 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps, the westernmost having two islands. [1-3] Formed along valley bottom."Ponds Cottage" and "Pool Farm" nearby. Also possible mill and water meadow system. [4] The fishponds also appear on the Luxborough Tithe Map of 1843. [5] The ponds still appear to be extant. They are likely to be associated with Chargot House. [6,7] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [8]
