Full Description
Manor Farm is a collection of surviving late 18th and 19th century buildings arranged in a courtyard plan, once the demesne farm of the manor of Beggearn Huish. [1] Beggearn Huish is recorded as being held by Maerleswein prior to the Norman Conquest, and was granted to the Paynel family post 1066, passing to the Luttrell family in 1232. They had inherited the claim to the property on the marriage of the heiress Frethesant Paynell to Geoffrey Luttrell in February 1204, after the line of Alice Gaunt (nee Paynel) ended without issue. The Luttrell family managed Beggearn Huish as part of their larger holdings in West Somerset, acquiring Dunster Castle and its holdings in 1376. The manor passed in 1690 to the Wyndham family, cousins of the Luttrells who also descend from Frethesant. [2] The original manor house, associated with the medieval and post medieval inhabitation, is thought to have lain to the west of the surviving later farm buildings. Known as The Higher House, it was demolished in the 1790s, although a possible building platform is visible on LiDAR. [3] The farm buildings are shown in various incarnations on a series of maps, with the earliest depiction of agricultural buildings dating to an 1801 manorial map. [1, ibid] It is then visible on the 1843 tithe map showing a U-shaped block of buildings and the separate threshing barn. [5]
