MEM25075 - Bronze Age burial cairn, and/or medieval or post-medieval boundary marker on Castle Common (Monument)

A stony mound was noted during field survey in 2017. It was thought most likely to be a prehistoric funerary monument, although it may also represent a marker for the Challacombe and Brayford Parish boundary, or a dump of stone.

SS 70827 39219. A stony mound was noted during field survey in 2017, measuring 5.5 metres north to south, 6 metres east to west and 0.6 metres high. It was thought most likely to be a prehistoric funerary monument due to its size, form and location, together with the lack of any other stone heaps; however, it may also represent a marker for the Challacombe and Brayford Parish boundary, or perhaps a dump of stone associated with the enclosure boundary. A previously unrecorded probable Bronze Age cairn was discovered on Castle Common during an initial site visit by Martin Gillard, EMP Historic Environment Officer. It may also have been used as a parish boundary marker. [1]
