MEM23431 - Late 19th or early 20th finger post east of Sundial House, Wheddon Cross (Building)

The signpost is within a garden adjacent to an important crossroads in Wheddon Cross, which provides access to Taunton, Minehead, Tiverton/Bampton and Exford. It features two distinctive arms marking the directions for the A396.

A guide post is marked on modern MasterMap data. [1] The signpost was visited in October 2015 and its condition assessed. It has SCC (Somerset County Council) repeated on the four sides of a pyramid finial. The attached fingers read: EXFORD 5 SIMONSBATH 10 B3224 [missing finger] DULVERTON 9 3/4 BAMPTON 13 1/2 TIVERTON 20 MINEHEAD 9 DUNSTER 6 1/2. [2] A396, SS 9243 3881. An important Exmoor road junction on the A396 (the 1824 Turnpike Trust road) with a cross road to Taunton and Exford. Two of the arms have large blades with flat tips and a raised lipped border and are likely to date to the late 19th or early 20th Century; they are the earliest known in position on Exmoor. They are similar to some in South petherton on a post made by Bishop Brothers foundry in Wellington. The arms were likely reinstated with a new post and finial as soon as possible during or after World War Two. [3] The heritage asset was assessed for inclusion on the Exmoor Local Heritage List in February 2024. It was decided to add the asset to the Local Heritage List. [4]
