MEM23419 - Redpost or Red Post signpost, Luccombe (Building)

A guide post is marked on modern MasterMap data. [1] The signpost was visited in October 2015 and its condition assessed. It has SCC (Somerset County Council) repeated on the four sides of a pyramid finial. The attached fingers read: FILTER STATION WEST LUCCOMBE 1/4 PORLOCK 3/4 A39; interlocking with MINEHEAD 5 1/4 A39 HORNER 3/4 LUCCOMBE 2 The collar reads REDPOST. The post was made by Sheldon Wells. [2] A Guide Post is shown here on the 25 inch 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map and named Red Post. [3] "Post" probably indicates that at some point a marker or guide post was set up to help travellers, especially useful across open moorland. SS 8971 4650. Red Post is named and shown as a guide post on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map [3]. It is the only post on Exmoor known traditionally to have been a different colour and has a painted red post.
