Full Description

Ascending the hill alongside the Ship Inn, to where the lanes converge, on the right is a row of cottages thatched at each end. They are stone built, some whitewashed or rendered and picturesquely set above the carriageway and approached by steps. The series of front lateral stacks suggest a date, possibly as early as the late 17th Century. Most retain timber casement windows and plank doors. [1] The row is mentioned in the 2022 Conservation Area Appraisal for Porlock Weir. [2] The buildings are depicted on the 2022 MasterMap data. They are labelled "Lane Head", with the easternmost building labelled "1" and the westernmost "6". [3] The houses are similarly depicted on the 25 inch 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps, but are shown with 8 subdivisions. [4,5] The row are also shown on the Tithe Map for Porlock. They appear to have been subdivided into 7 properties at this time. [6] The heritage asset was assessed for inclusion on the Exmoor Local Heritage List in November 2022. It was decided to add the asset to the Local Heritage List. [7]
