Full Description

SS 8301 4499. Cairn 6 paces diameter and 1 feet high (Oare 5b), discovered by Grinsell 25th April 1962 in recently swaled heath. [1] Is a small heather covered mound of peat and stones, unlikely to be a barrow. Is at SS 8284 4508 rather than SS 8301 4499 as given by Grinsell. [2] B.SS 8286 4504. One of three cairns discovered by Grinsell and visible as small heather covered stony mound situated at about 394 metres above Ordnance Datum on the top of the flat saddle ridge between Inner and Outer Alscott near Mill Hill. The cairn is about 4 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high. Some stones protrude in its southwest quadrant. Some 10 metres west of cairn A is a low heather-covered filed bank, part of the post medieval field system MMO657. It is possible that these are stone clearance heaps associated with it but their soild symmetrical appearance and prominent isolated position on the ridge suggest that they are almost certainly prehistoric burial cairns.
