MMO2323 - Post-mediveal quarry southwest of Three Combe Hill (Monument)

A post-medieval quarry is visible on aerial photographs as a substantial earthwork. It is not apparent from aerial photographs what material was extracted here, but there are a number of other quarries in the vicinity.

A post-medieval quarry is visible on aerial photographs as a substantial earthwork southwest of Three Combe Hill, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7871 4059, the quarry is visible as a roughly circular depression, measuring approximately 40 metres across at its widest point. Within this central area, several deeper cuts of varying shapes and sizes are visible, suggesting that the quarry was reworked, or that a mineral seam was exploited. The quarry is depicted, but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, suggesting is was abandoned prior to this date. It is not apparent from aerial photographs what material was extracted here, but there are a number of other quarries in the vicinity. [1-3]
