Full Description

A possible small hillslope enclosure or large hut circle and associated field boundary bank can be seen on aerial photographs as earthworks on Lucott Moor, centred on circa SS 8590 4436. The earthworks are very subtle and have probably been somewhat denuded by modern agricultural improvements, but have been interpreted as forming banks up to 3 metres wide. The banks define a subcircular enclosure approximately 15 metres in diameter that is abutted on its northern edge by a 16 metre long linear boundary. This boundary in turn intersects with a second bank at circa SS 8591 4437 that can be seen climbing the hillside to the west of the enclosure for over 200 metres. These earthworks could have been a persistent feature on the landscape and the field bank might have influenced the course of the footpath to the west. A similar but slightly smaller Bronze Age hut circle and field bank has been recorded on Holdstone Down. A slightly larger late prehistoric enclosure has been recorded approximately 250 metres to the southeast but it is unclear if the sites are contemporaneous.
