MMO2219 - Post-medieval quarry and spoil heap south of North Regis Common (Monument)

A post-medieval quarry and associated spoil heap is visible on aerial photographs. It is possible that this quarry was one of the first of a complex, with production moving north after the quarry was exhausted.

A post-medieval quarry and associated spoil heap is visible on aerial photographs in a field south of North Regis Common, Challacombe. Located at approximately SS 7112 4115 the quarry measures 16 metres across. Small mounds on either side of the pit most likely represent spoil heaps. The quarry is depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it was abandoned prior to this date. Several quarries are shown on the 1st Edition map to the north of this quarry, annotated "North Regis Quarries." It is possible that this quarry was one of the first of a complex, with production moving north after the quarry was exhausted.
