MMO1982 - Medieval or post-medieval quarry east of West Lyn Farm (Monument)

A quarry of probable medieval or post-medieval date is visible on aerial photographs as a levelled earthwork, to the east of West Lyn Farm, centred on circa SS 72934809. The earthwork is not annotated as such on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, but is differentiated from the surrounding fields by the map convention for rough pasture. This, plus the fact that a field boundary has been laid across it, may indicate that it has passed out of use by this time, but that the earthworks had not yet been fully levelled. The earthworks are visible on aerial photographs of 1952 but the area appears to have been levelled and is under cultivation by 1995.
