Full Description

Three quarries or extractive pits of probable post-medieval date can be seen on Lyn Down as earthworks on aerial photographs, centred on approximately SS 7252 4768. The earthworks are marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, annotated as Old Quarries, which might indicate they had passed out of use by this time. Although the detail of the earthworks remains somewhat obscured by vegetation, it is clear on aerial photographs of 1995 and the latest images available on Google Earth (at the time of recording) that the two larger quarries survive as earthworks. The smaller pit, circa 25 metres to the east of the larger pits at SS 7256 4760, may have been partially infilled during the improvement of the surrounding pasture. [1-4] The 'old quarries' are also shown on the Ordnance Survey 6 inch maps of 1903 and 1962. [5,6] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [7]
