Full Description

A Second World War linear barbed wire obstruction, centred on SS 8637 4809, was mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1941. Located north and east of Porlock Weir dock, the linear barbed wire rolls are supported by posts. The wire obstruction is about 2 metres wide and extends 82 metres east-west from the boundary fence which marks the northern-most end of the dock to the shingle beach (SS 8626 4812). It then turns southeast on the beach and runs for 95 metres parallel to the sea to a type 24 pillbox (MSO7931), and then another 56 metres to the southeast at which point there is a 1-2 metre gap in the obstruction (SS 8645 4802). The obstruction continues about 75 metres around the seaward side of a second type 24 pillbox (MSO7932), terminating on the wooden groyne at the end of the quay (SS 8646 4798). The structure was no longer visible in aerial photographs taken in 1946.
