Full Description
A 19th or more likely early 20th century small decorative archway was uncovered following tree felling works in 2025, located at SS90585 35189. [1] The arch is formed of rusticated dressed stone, with a concave rear. Superficially, the arrangement looks like the location of a standpipe water outlet but there is no sign of a water inlet or outlet so its particular function remains unknown. It is small in size, standing approximately 1m in height. [2, 3] Neighbouring Vicarage Bridge was reconstructed in 1927-1928, and the road level was raised during this time. As the arch is aligned to the current road level, it is likely contemporary to this date. However, it may possibly be shown on the 1st Edition OS Map, giving it an earlier date, potentially connected with the nearby Glebe Stables which were constructed in the early 19th century. [4]
