Full Description

"Pickedstones Farm" is shown on the 25 inch 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map at SS 8003 3715., consisting of three linear ranges organised around a rectangular central yard, occupying the northeastern (longer), northwestern and southeastern sides. The farmhouse is shown in the centre of the northeastern range. [1] The farmstead is shown on the 2022 MasterMap data and is labelled "Pickedstones Farm". [2] Orwin states that in 1861, Honeymead farm (MEM23050) was split to form Picked Stones farm (385 acres) and Winstitchen Farm (MEM23059, 407 acres). [3] In letters sent by John Mogridge to Frederick Winn Knight in 1846, several buildings are mentioned at Picked Stones. These include pigsties and cowsheds [4] and a "Cheese Room", the latter of which was to be plastered and lathed to prevent the cheese being "injured by the Heat of the Slate" [5,6]. It is therefore possible that the farm was set up before the split mentioned by Orwin [3]. The tenant at this time in 1846 was Matthews. [7]
