Full Description

The Tithe Map for Winsford shows a large group of buildings at c. SS 9148 3343, within land parcel 846. The accompanying Apportionment lists this under "Higher Wick" and describes this as "Houseā€¦Barton etc", owned by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland and occupied by George Hooper. Some of the buildings shown on this map still appear to be extant, including the farmhouse at SS91463343, and three outbuildings at SS 9145 3340, SS 9148 3341 and possibly SS 9150 3342. The remainder, including a long angled range stretching around the rear (north) of the farmhouse at c. SS 9146 3346 and a group of buildings to the south of the farmhouse at SS 9145 3341, appear to have been removed gradually over time, with the L shaped range at SS 9149 3345 being in place by the time the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map was surveyed. Other smaller buildings first depicted on the 1st Edition map have also been removed since the 2nd Edition map was surveyed, save for a single structure at SS 9144 3340. The 1st Edition map depicts a pond at SS 9147 3340, which still appears to be in situ, but also shows a well at SS 9148 3342, which is not depicted on the 2nd Edition map. The site was labelled "Higher Week" at this time. The site now includes larger agricultural buildings at its northeastern extent, as well as a slurry bed, and is labelled "Week Farm". [1-4] The site was visited in April 1997 as part of the Exmoor Farmsteads survey. The house was noted to be large, with two front lateral stacks and a probable three room plan. Off the east gable was an open ended yard of smallish buildings, with a mid 19th Century barn with a range at a right angle, dressed in brick. The remainder of the buildings on the site were of rubble stone and slate. Further to the south, beyond a narrow garden, was noted various other minor rubble and slate 19th Century cart sheds and shippons. [5]
