Full Description

The Tithe Map for Exford shows a small building labelled "Buckworthy" at c. SS 8425 3735. It includes a small garden to the southeast, and another garden to the south at c. SS 8420 3727. These two areas on the map are labelled 227 and 228 respectively, which the accompanying Apportionment separately describes as "Cottage and Garden" and "Garden". These were owned by the Reverend James Buckingham and occupied by Charles Hooper. [1] By the time the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map had been surveyed, the original building had either been much extended to the northwest or (less likely) had been demolished and a much larger structure built in the same location. The garden shown on the Tithe Map at c. SS 8420 3727 had been removed by this point. Two very small buildings are also shown at SS 8421 3735 and SS 8422 3734 and a well is depicted at SS 8422 3732. This arrangement is depicted on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map and the main building is shown in a similar configuration presently, although the two small outbuildings have since been removed and several modern agricultural buildings have been introduced to the northwest of the farmhouse. [2-4] The site was viewed from a distance as part of the Exmoor Farmsteads survey in February 1997. The house was thought to be 20th Century but it was also stated it could be earlier in date. The site of an older yard was not detected. The centre of the 20th Century farmstead was noted to be to the northwest. [5]
