Full Description

The farmstead is shown on the Tithe Map for Dulverton and labelled "Draydon". The original farmhouse appears to have been sited at SS 8948 2989 but was (at least partially) demolished and rebuilt in its present location by the time the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map was surveyed. Several of the present buildings on the site appear to be shown on this map. [1-4] Draydon Farm is mentioned in property particulars from August 1926 on the sale of the Northmoor Estate. It is described as a "valuable stock raising farm" of 302 acres. The farmhouse itself is described as a "superior residence" with a hall, dining room, sitting room, kitchen with range, larder, scullery, dairy, washhouse with furnace, outside WC, and on the first floor six bedrooms approached by two staircases, a bathroom with hot and cold running water and a "fixed lavatory basin" and "good cellarage." The farm buildings are described as "excellent" and mostly stone built, comprising a six stall cart horse stable, hackney stable with two stalls and two loose boxes (implying up to 10 horses kept on the farm), trap house or garage, cow stalls for 10 and calves house with feeding walk, fattening pens for 18, cattle linhay with feeding walk, root house, barn and engine house with granary over, cart shed, piggeries, wood house, dutch barn &c. The land is listed as largely rented to the executors of the estate of Mr John Gregory, with an explicitly pre-war rent of £218, 9 shillings and tuppence per annum. This alongside other estate rents is described elsewhere in the property particulars as well below market value. A quarry on the land, known as the Draydon Quarry, earned £4 16 shillings from Dulverton Rural District Council. [5]
