MEM22520 - Prehistoric cairn on Deer Park (Monument)

A possible prehistoric cairn was noted during a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, undertaken by South West Archaeology as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. This was visible as an arrangement of stones set in a rough 'floor' measuring 1.8 metres across, with other smaller stones apparently set in a ring 2 to 4 metres in diameter located around the 'floor'. An 18th Century road crosses the nearby stony area (MEM22519) here, and therefore this feature may represent road related repairs. [1] The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, which included this site. Noted was a well defined cairn with a roughly oval morphology. This measured 3 metres by 5 metres in plan with a maximum height of approximately 0.3 metres. [2]
