MMO2752 - Post-medieval quarries at North Twitchen (Monument)

A pair of small sub-circular quarries are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks. The quarries most likely date to the post-medieval period, and are possibly associated with the deserted settlement of Mount Pleasant (MMO2795).

A pair of small subcircular quarries are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks on moorland at North Twitchen, North Molton. The larger quarry, at SS 7249 3718 measures approximately 22 metres across, while the smaller quarry measures 12 metres. Both are cut into a natural shelf above the nearby stream. The smaller of the two quarries is depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting that both had been abandoned some time prior to this date. They most likely date to the post-medieval period, and are possibly associated with the deserted settlement of Mount Pleasant, visible as a ruin and associated earthworks to the east.
