What is it?
This is a saddle quern, made of stone. Its bowl shape is a result of the process of grinding grain during food preparation. The grain would be placed on the stone and a smaller rounded handheld stone would be used to crush the grain on the base stone's surface. This stone has been dated to the Neolithic or Bronze Age periods.
Where was it found?
It was found in the river bank near Landacre Bridge.
Why is it important?
It provides an insight into the domestic practices of people at the time and indicates that early cultivation was taking place on or near Exmoor.
