Full Description

The churchyard cross dates to the 14th century and was restored in the late 20th Century. Blue lias and Ham stone. Square, one stage calvary, octagonal socket broached to a square with inset stump of octagonal shaft, continued in Ham stone with gabled cross. Restored in memory of the rector. Not mentioned in Pooley, Old Crosses of Somerset, 1877. [1] Fragmentary remains of an ancient socket of a cross exist in the churchyard of Withypoole. [2] The cross consists of a step, socket stone and a small portion of the original shaft. A modern shaft and cross head have been added. See GP/AO/65/183/6. [6] Remains of Churchyard Cross Consists only of stump of octagonal shaft in octagonal socket, hip stopped to square base. [7] (SS 8464 3553) Cross (NR) (restored) (NAT). [8] The building was visited in June 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 5A. [9] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project.
