Source/Archive record SEM8445 - Archaeological walkover survey on Lucott Moor (LLM12)

The survey was undertaken as part of the historic environment strand of the Exmoor Mires Project (EMP) in advance of mire restoration work on Lucott Moor. It was carried out on 5th January 2012 by Lee Bray, the Exmoor Mires Project Historic Environment Officer. Proposed restoration work on Lucott Moor consists of the blocking of a single ditch using wooden and peat dams. This ditch is situated at the boundary between unimproved moorland to the east and improved pasture to the west and becomes more substantial to the north. Of the heritage assets identified as being in the vicinity of the site only MSO7776, part of the World War artillery range and MMO2508, an extensive area of peat cuttings possibly dating partially to the medieval period, coincided with the area in which the survey would be undertaken. Both areas comprise numerous smaller features but none of these were seen to fall within the area of potential threat. Outside the mire restoration area to the west is a small quarry (MMO2540) which is most likely of post-medieval date, and the source of the stone used to construct the field boundaries in the area. Additional, also in this area are a series of mounds and depressions arranged in regular rows and grids that were created by training activity during the Second World War although the exact nature of this activity remains obscure. Walkover survey failed to identify any previously unidentified archaeological features within the areas examined.
