MSO8660 - Post-medieval ironstone pits at Red Girts (Monument)

Centred at SS 99264 39711 are a group of five iron ore pits at the head of Red Girts. They are well defined and average 5 metres in diameter and vary between 1.2 metres and 4 metres deep. They seem to mark attempts to extract iron ore from the upper part of the deep combe known as Red Girts. Found during field reconnaissance and surveyed with GPS.
