Full Description

ST 0564 3624. Barrow like feature shown on Ordnance Survey one inch 1st Edition 1809 just northwest of Colton Cross. [1] The barrow is now only visible as an amorphous mound in unimproved heathland. Not recommended for scheduling. [2] The mound described above is clearly visible on aerial photographs as a low, roughly circular earthwork measuring some 12 metres in diameter. Its form and location, close to the summit of a hillcrest, are both fairly typical of Bronze Age barrows found on Exmoor. [3,4] The barrow is mentioned in the Nettlecombe Parkland Plan dating from 2016. When the report was produced, the feature had been mapped at ST 0563 3624 (possibly provided by [2]?); however, it has since been corrected to properly reflect the evidence provided by the National Mapping Project [5] and the originally held grid reference [1]. Assuming this is correct, a meterological station now appears to be depicted on the site of the barrow on modern MasterMap data. [1,4-6] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [7]
