MSO7470 - Ditch farmstead (Monument)

Summary

Ditch farmstead was documented in 1506-1556. The farmhouse was demolished in 1948, but the remains of the cowshed are still visible with exposed roof timbers and two late medieval doorways.

Full Description

The deserted farmstead of Ditch was noted in the Court Rolls of 1506-1556. [1] Absorbed by Westcott Farm in 1789 and in 1825 the eastern 31 acres was transferred to Newcombe Farm. House pulled down after 1948. Dilapidated cow-shed remains built of cob and stone with original roof timbers and two late medieval doorways. Linhay nearby. [2] Ordnance Survey 1962 6 inch map marks area as "Ditch cottage". [3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [8]
