MSO11172 - Post-medieval lime kiln and quarry east of Kersham (Monument)

Summary

A limekiln and quarry noted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch maps of 1889 and 1904, but not on the 6 inch map of 1962. The quarry earthworks survive but the kiln is no longer visible.

Full Description

A limekiln appears on Ordnance Survey maps of 1889. [1] 'Old limekiln' printed on OS 1904 map. [2] 'Old Quarry' shown on 1962 map. [3] The site of the kiln is at SS 9442 3888. The location is beside a sunken lane, where a slight hollowing marks the site of the kiln. The field to the east is occupied by the lime quarry with adjacent spoil mounds. [4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
