MMO3256 - Medieval field boundary on North Molton Ridge (Monument)

A probable medieval field boundary is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the southern edge of North Molton Ridge, North Molton. Centred at approximately SS 7717 3222, the boundary runs east to west for some 400 metres, before curving slightly to the south for 30 metres, after which it fades from view. The boundary is cut by the roadway and therefore predates it, and is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, indicating it was abandoned prior to publication in 1891. It most likely represents a medieval attempt to enclose the moorland.
