MMO3232 - Medieval or post-medieval linear feature east of Twitchen Ball Corner (Monument)

A small linear depression is visible on aerial photograph is depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it was abandoned some time prior to its publication. It may be medival or post-medieval in date.

A small linear depression is visible on aerial photographs east of Twitchen Ball Cross, North Molton. Centred at approximately SS 7866 3260, part of the quarry is in Twitchen and part in North Molton. It measures approximately 46 metres across. It is depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it was abandoned some time prior to publication in 1891. It most likely dates to the post-medieval period, although it may also be medieval in origin. There is no indication as to what was extracted here, but it may have provided building stone for the nearby roadways.
