MMO3034 - Medieval or post-medieval field boundaries northeast of Lanacre (Monument)

Low or levelled curved earthwork banks are probably the remains of field boundaries of probable post-medieval date. Centred on circa SS 82393644, the curved boundaries are characteristic of fields with boundaries based upon strip-fields of medieval origin. These earlier boundaries might have been fossilised by the enclosure of several bundles of strip fields by a single holding. Successive phases of post-medieval enclosure often removed further boundaries to create larger fields, resulting in the field pattern visible today.
