MMO2978 - Post-medieval quarry southwest of Sellbed Cross (Monument)

An earthwork pit, probably the remains of a quarry of probable post-medieval date, is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as earthworks near Sellbed Cross, centred on circa SS 8271 3774. The pit is marked on both the 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps, but is not annotated. However, it abuts the course of Lanacre Lane/Chibbet Hill and may have supplied road building materials, probably in the 19th Century. It also appears to be fully enclosed on all sides excepting the road, which may support this interpretation.
