Full Description

A small circular depression is visible on aerial photographs on the eastern edge of Fyldon Common, and is most likely the remains of a post-medieval quarry or gravel pit. Centred at approximately SS 7597 3558, the pit measures approximately 20 metres in diameter. The nearby road junction is known as "Gravel Pit Cross" suggesting that there may have been several gravel pits and extraction sites nearby. The pit is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it was abandoned some time prior to publication in 1890. It most likely dates to the post-medieval period, although it may also be medieval in origin.
