MMO2852 - Post-medieval field boundary on Bye Hill (Monument)

A field boundary of probable post-medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards. The boundary is not marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map and probably therefore predates 1890.

A field boundary of probable post-medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, centred on circa SS 8914 3572, on Bye Hill, Winsford parish. The boundary is not marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map and therefore probably predates 1890. It is approximately 170 metres long and almost abuts the extant boundaries at its western and eastern ends. The line of this boundary also continues in the adjacent field to the east, over the summit of Bye Hill. This may support the interpretation that the earthwork is contemporary with the surrounding field system, was laid out during the enclosure phase but was either not fully constructed or abandoned soon after enclosure.
