Full Description

A large quarry pit of probable post-medieval date is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the southern edge of Bye Common, Winsford parish, centred on circa SS 8802 3567. The pit is roughly ovoid in shape, almost 50 metres long east to west, and 15 metres wide. No entrance track can be seen. It is not marked as an earthwork on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map. However it does correspond to an area depicted as rough, unimproved ground, abutting a now removed field boundary. This probably represents the area of the pit and may support the interpretation that it had passed out of use by 1890.
