Summary

A small circular quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork. It is depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, and annotated "old quarry" suggesting that it was abandoned shortly before publication.

Full Description

A small subcircular quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the northeast edge of Shoulsbarrow Common, Challacombe. Centred at SS 7098 3955, the quarry measures 26 metres long by approximately 14 metres wide. It is depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, and annotated "old quarry" suggesting that it was abandoned shortly before publication. [1-3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
