Full Description

A circular mound is visible on aerial photographs as a slight earthwork south of Butter Hill Plantation, Lynton and Lynmouth. Centred at approximately SS 7108 7326, the mound measures approximately 7 metres in diametre, and is situated in a prominent position close to the summit of the Common, overlooking an un-named tributary of Barbrook. Given its form and location, the mound is likely to be the remains of a prehistoric funerary monument, possibly a barrow or cairn dating to the Bronze Age. A large number of other Bronze Age barrows are visible less than 1km to the south of this monument, including Longstone Barrow and Woodbarrow, while the eastern edges of the Chapman Barrows can be seen to the west.
