Full Description

A probable post-medieval quarry or pit is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork in a field northwest of Hoaroak Cottage, Exmoor. Centred at SS 7403 4364, the pit is roughly oval and measures some 7 metres across. It is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it was abandoned prior to publication in 1889. There is no indication as to what material was being extractd here, however given the proximity to Hoaroak Cottage and its associated boundaries, it may well have provided building stone for the cottage or field boundaries.
