Full Description

A post-medieval quarry is visible on aerial photographs as a substantial earthwork on the north-western slopes of Alcombe Common, Minehead. Centred at approximately SS 9710 4417, the quarry consists of two cuts into the slope, one measuring some 13 metres across, and a second larger quarry measuring 52 metres across adjacent to the first. It is depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, and annotated "old quarry" suggesting it was abandoned prior to publication in 1889. Within the quarry several deciduous trees are shown, indicating the quarry had become overgrown and therefore suggesting it had been out of use for some time. There is no indication as to what material was extracted here; however, a number of other quarries and gravel pits are visible in the vicinity.
