MMO2215 - Medieval or post-medieval boundary west of Broad Mead (Monument)

A linear cropmark is visible on aerial photographs in fields west of Broad Mead, Challacombe. Centred at approximately SS 7146 4120 the cropmark runs north to south for apptroximately 220 metres. It most likely represents the remains of a former boundary ditch, or possibly a removed hedge boundary. At SS 71446 4124, the cropmark is overlain by a linear field boundary which was probably laid out in the 19th century. The area is shown as moorland on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting the boundary had been removed some time prior to the publication in 1890 and the area allowed to revert back to moor. A medieval or early post-medieval date seems most likely.
