Full Description

A post-medieval stone quarry or extractive pit is visible on aerial photographs on the northeast slope of West Ilkerton Common. Centred at SS 6970 4672 the oval quarry measures 28 metres across. On the northeastern side a small mound is visible, which may represent spoil from the quarrying. It is depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting that it was abandoned prior to the publication of the map in 1889. [1-3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
