MMO1028 - Possible post-medieval ironstone pits north of Broad Lane, Exton (Monument)

A linear series of approximately twenty, small (4 metre to 10 metre) circular depressions, are clearly visible as earthworks on vertical aerial photograph, to the north of Broad Lane, Exton. These features, which are very uniform in shape and size, may be post medieval (or earlier) ironstone pits. [1-3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4] The pits remain clearly visible as extant earthworks in LiDAR imagery. That they occur in a broadly linear north-south alignment suggests that they are following a lode, supporting the identification as ironstone pits. [5] This record was enhanced by Cornwall HER for the Forestry Commission's Project K. [6]
