MEM25808 - Post medieval quarry pit south of Pitt Bridge (Monument)

A small quarry pit was observed as part of the National Mapping programme at SS9431 4115, but it was at the time thought to be unclear whether the pit pre or post dates the surrounding catchwork meadow. [1] It is tempting to speculate that Pitt Bridge, to the north, may reflect the presence of quarrying activity in the area, including the multiple pits present to the south west at Oaktrow Wood, in addition to Pitt Cottages. The name Pitt for the area is recorded on the Tithe Map for Timberscombe confirming the presence of the quarrying activity at least as early as 1843 [2]. The pit is visible on LiDAR which assisted in mapping its location. [3]
