Full Description

A post medieval stone built cottage is visible from MasterMap data. [1] The property is recorded on the 1841 tithe map for Trentishoe. It is recorded as Higher Cott, and listed in the apportionment as being in the ownership of Miss Challacombe (now William Pugsley). A Jane Challacombe married William Pugsley in 1811 at Combe Martin and is presumably the Miss Challacombe referenced as the owner of Higher Cott and its surroundings, labelled in the tithe map as an orchard, garden and meadows. [2] The cottage was observed from a distance on a site visit to neighbouring Dean Wood in April 2026. It is constructed of stone, with a more recent tiled roof. It has a lean-to at the northern end and chimney gable on the southern elevation. It is likely late 18th to early 19th century in date but may be earlier. [3] The cottage is earlier in date than the other buildings recorded as Dean Wood Cottage, MDE8992, but may nonetheless be part of this small sub-community.
