Full Description

The Tithe Map for Wootton Courtenay depicts a house at SS 9329 4231 with a rectangular building at SS 9327 4230. They are within land parcel 518, which the Apportionment described as a "Farm House Garden Barn and Court", and was surrounded by three orchard plots (516, 517 and 519). The site its labelled "Stile", owned by the Right Honorable Lord Sherborne and William Burnell, occupied by the latter. [1] The site is shown on the 25 inch 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map. By this time, the barn shown on the Tithe Map [1] had been replaced with a small square building (SS 9327 4231). [2] The 2018 MasterMap data shows the farmhouse has been extended slightly to the rear. The orchards have been removed, although some of their boundaries are still extant. [3] Stile was part of the Wootton Courtenay Estate and was sold at auction by James Huntly Dutton on Wednesday 14th April 1921, as lot 11. A picture of the cottage is shown in the sales particulars.
